Paper Garden Records (SCQ Year-End Questionnaire Part V)

Few young labels have caught me off-guard this year the way Paper Garden Records has, issuing the underground smash EP by Emanuel and the Fear as well as Peasant’s heartbreaking debut On the Ground. With the additional success of Darla Farmer and the music/art/comedy mash-up of Multiverse Playground, label-head Bryan Vaughan digs into his favourites as well as the many, many special occasions on tap for 2010.

SCQ: What have been some of your favourite records of 2009? Gush away.

Phoenix, The Antlers, Handsome Furs, Cursive, Shad, AMIT, Project Jenny Project Jan, The Wooden Sky...and of course my bias favorites - Emanuel and the Fear, Peasant, and Darla Farmer

SCQ: Be it from the radio, lost on Myspace or from your roster, what song(s) could you not stop spinning?

Philadelphia Slick "R & B Stole The Show", Shad "Cheap", Peasant "We're Good" Darla Farmer "Mechanical Thoughts", Emanuel and the Fear "The Rain Becomes The Clouds", Das Racist "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell", Project Jenny Project Jan "Caller ID"

SCQ: Seldom celebrated but crucial to The Album’s identity is cover-art. Can you offer any shortlist of personal favourites from the past year?

Project Jenny Project Jan, Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors

SCQ: When you look back on what transpired this year, what will stand out as your most memorable professional moment(s) of 2009?

Professional eh? I'd have to go with David Byrne's appearance on Colbert Report...I was there!

SCQ: Most of us probably haven’t thought as far as New Years Eve plans but still, looking forward, what do you have on the horizon for 2010?

2010 plans for Paper Garden are about 2378 times bigger than 2009 - and 2009 was BIG! We have 4 new albums slotted for Spring in addition to international touring, expansion into all new branches, worldwide distribution, and loads more! Be on the lookout for new material from Peasant, Darla Farmer, Emanuel and the Fear, and Mighty Tiger that will blow your face off!
